  • Siddharth (1986): First computer made in India.
  • Computer Literacy Day: Celebrated on 2nd December.

CPU Speed Measurement: Measured in clock cycles (Hz, kHz, MHz, GHz). Example: 3.0 GHz = 3 billion cycles per second.

2. Generations & Types of Computers

GenerationHardware ComponentKey Characteristics & Examples

Fifth (Present & Beyond)ULSI, AI ChipsAI, Machine Learning, Robotics, NLP. Ex: IBM Watson, Quantum Computers

Types Based on Type & Purpose

  • Analog: Continuous data (Thermometer, Speedometer).
  • Digital: Discrete/binary data (PC, Laptop).
  • Hybrid: Analog + Digital (Petrol pumps, ECG).
  • General Purpose: Multi-task (Browsing, gaming).
  • Special Purpose: Built for specific task (ATMs, Weather forecast).

Types Based on Size

  • Supercomputers: Most powerful (PARAM, Summit, Frontier).
  • Mainframe: Large systems for bulk processing (IBM zSeries).
  • Minicomputers: Mid-sized for small businesses (PDP-11).
  • Microcomputers: Smallest, personal use (Desktops, Smartphones).
  • India's First Supercomputer: PARAM 8000 (1991, C-DAC).

3. Architecture & I/O Devices

CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain of the computer. It consists of:

  • Control Unit (CU): Directs data flow and instructions.
  • ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit): Performs mathematical & logical (>, <, =) operations.
  • Registers: High-speed internal storage for temporary data.
Input DevicesOutput Devices
  • Keyboard & Mouse (Pointing device)
  • Scanner, OCR, OMR, MICR (Banks), Barcode/QR Scanner
  • Trackball, Joystick, Light Pen, Stylus
  • Biometric: Fingerprint, Iris, Face, Voice Recognition
  • Monitor (VDU): CRT, LCD, LED, OLED
  • Printers:
Impact: Dot Matrix, Line, Daisy Wheel (noisy, strike paper)
Non-Impact: Inkjet, Laser, Thermal (fast, quiet)
  • Plotter: For large blueprints/maps
  • Speaker & Headphones

4. Computer Memory & Units

Memory Hierarchy (Fastest to Slowest): Registers → Cache Memory (L1, L2, L3) → Primary Memory (RAM/ROM) → Secondary Memory (HDD/SSD).

Primary Memory

  • RAM (Random Access Memory): Volatile (data lost on power off), Read/Write. Types: SRAM (Cache, fast/costly), DRAM (Main memory, needs refresh).
  • ROM (Read Only Memory): Non-volatile (data retained), mostly Read-only. Types: PROM (programmable once), EPROM (UV erasable), EEPROM (Electrically erasable), Flash Memory (SSDs/Pen drives).

Secondary Memory

  • Magnetic: Hard Disk Drive (HDD).
  • Optical: CD (700 MB), DVD (4.7-17 GB), Blu-Ray (25-128 GB).
  • Solid-State: SSD (faster, no moving parts), USB Flash Drive, SD Cards.

Memory Units Hierarchy

Trick: Brilliant New Boys Know Memory Grows Too Powerful Every Zone Yes!

Bit (0/1) ➔ Nibble (4 bits) ➔ Byte (8 bits) ➔ KB (1024 B) ➔ MB ➔ GB ➔ TB ➔ PB ➔ EB ➔ ZB ➔ YB

5. Languages & Software

Computer Languages

  • Low-Level: Machine Lang (0s & 1s, fastest), Assembly Lang (Mnemonics like ADD, SUB).
  • High-Level (HLL): English-like. Procedural: C, FORTRAN (First HLL, scientific), COBOL (Business). OOP: C++, Java, Python.
  • 4GL/5GL: SQL, Prolog, LISP (used in AI).
  • Translators: Compiler (whole program), Interpreter (line by line), Assembler (Assembly to Machine).

Software Types

  • System Software: OS, Device Drivers, Utility Programs (Antivirus, WinRAR).
  • Application Software: General (MS Office, VLC), Special Purpose (Tally, AutoCAD).
  • Freeware: Free, no modify (Skype). Shareware: Trial then paid. Open Source: Source code available (Linux, Python).
  • Firmware: Permanent software in ROM (BIOS).

6. OS & Important Shortcuts

Operating System (OS): Interface between user and hardware. Functions: Process, Memory, File, Device management, Security, UI.
